PRE-ORDER: Syndicate

Syndicate is an upcoming game by Starbreeze Studios set for release in February 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. It is a reboot of the Syndicate series developed by Bullfrog Productions, completely changing the genre from a tactical shooter to an FPS.
2069: No longer governed by politicians, the developed world is divided up into regions controlled by mega-corporations known as syndicates. These syndicates have revolutionized how the consumer interacts with the digital world. Since the consumer requires a device to access the world's data and control technology, they can do this in the blink of an eye via neural chip implant.

Civilians flocked to be "Chip'd" and enjoy all that their selected syndicate has to offer: housing, medical, banking, insurance, education, entertainment and jobs. One complete package. One complete lifestyle. In return, the syndicates gained unprecedented insights, and control, over the individual and their behavior. With little government oversight, business has become war. The syndicates will stop at nothing for ultimate market dominance.

At the first line of this war are the agents, the syndicate's bio-engineered and chip-augmented enforcers. They can breach anything in the wired dataverse, including their enemies, their weapons and the environment that surrounds them, making them the most efficient and deadly technological weapons in the world. Take on the role of Miles Kilo, EuroCorp's latest prototype agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.

Players are not limited to the weapons in their hands. Through the DART 6 bio-chip technology implanted in their head, players can slow down time and breach the digital world around them to take down their foes using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics. The game has been described as a "kind of mix between Crysis-style first-person shooter action and the clean sci-fi world of Mass Effect". A four-player co-op mode has been confirmed, with a separate campaign based on missions from the original game. Unlike other EA games, Syndicate will not use an online pass for the co-op modes, Furthermore, EA Partners executive producer Jeff Gamon stated that "If the game had included a competitive mode, it would have had an online pass. But because it didn't have competitive multiplayer and because we wanted as many people as possible to be playing co-op, we got away with it." He also stated that he wanted "as little resistance or barriers to entry as possible".

PRE-ORDER: PROTOTYPE 2

The sequel to our best-selling open-world game of 2009, PROTOTYPE 2 takes the unsurpassed carnage of the original PROTOTYPE and continues the experience of becoming the ultimate shape-shifting weapon.  As the game’s all-new infected protagonist, Sgt. James Heller, players will cut a bloody swathe through the wastelands of post-viral New York Zero (or more simply…NYZ) with unparalleled locomotion, building up a vast genetic arsenal of deadly, biological weapons and abilities as they hunt, kill and consume their way toward the ultimate goal – to kill…Alex…Mercer!

14 months have passed since New York became a disease-ridden war zone, and the man responsible for it all – Alex Mercer – has become a ghost, a bogeyman whose shadow looms over the city.  You are Sgt. James Heller – veteran soldier whose life was destroyed by Mercer’s release of the Blacklight virus.  With his wife and daughter casualties of the outbreak, Heller now serves in the military effort to keep the virus from spilling over beyond NYZ.  Repeatedly volunteering for the most dangerous, near suicidal missions into the heart of the city’s Red Zone, Heller is hoping to die and take as many Infected with him as he can in the process.  Heller’s last mission sees his entire unit massacred by a swarm of Infected, leaving him the sole survivor and putting him face-to-face with the shadowy hooded figure overseeing the ambush from a nearby rooftop – Alex Mercer – the man responsible for destroying his family, his city…his life.

Fueled by rage, Heller attacks but is clearly no match for Mercer’s abilities.  Impressed by Heller’s implausible survival of the Infected onslaught, Mercer sees Heller as a potentially valuable asset for his grand plan and infects him with the virus, making Heller his prototype.

NOW AVAILABLE AT SKOOBS: PRE-ORDER: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a single-player action role-playing game for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Ken Rolston, the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, acts as the game's executive designer. Additionally, noted fantasy author R.A. Salvatore created the game universe and lore, with Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, working on the artwork, and Grant Kirkhope, long-time composer for Rare Ltd., creating the musical score. It is being developed by 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. The game was released on February 7, 2012 in North America and will be released on February 10, 2012 in Europe & South Africa. The first public demonstration was at the Penny Arcade Expo East 2011 held in Boston, Massachusetts, United States on March 11, 2011.
Kingdoms of Amalur will feature "5 distinct regions, 4 playable races, and 3 class trees with 22 abilities per tree." The 4 playable races are the Almain (noble Humans) the Ljosalfar (Light Elves), the Dokkalfar (Dark Elves), and the Varani (nomadic Humans). The 3 class (or ability) trees are Might, Finesse, and Sorcery; they correspond to the fighter, rogue, and mage classes respectively. The player starts off as a "blank slate," waking up in a pile of corpses after returning from the dead. The game will utilize a unique "destiny" system, whereby the player can invest in a skill-tree system to unlock various "destinies," which acts as the class system for the game. Combat works based on the timing of button presses, similar to the style of an action RPG, with occasional quicktime events like those in the God of War series. Lead combat designer Joe Quadara, however, emphasized that "twitch skill is only going to get you so far. Strategy and proper RPG playing is going to get you farther." 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling said that the style of the game would be a marriage between God of War and Oblivion.

PRE-ORDER: Grand Theft Auto V

The game is to be set in fictional Los Santos in the state of San Andreas and its surrounding areas, based on modern-day Los Angeles and Southern California. A rendition of Los Santos was previously featured as one of three cities in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, from the series' third era. NOW AVAILABLE AT SKOOBS: SOUL CALIBUR: NOW AVAILABLE AT SKOOBS

Soul Calibur V review

by Garnett Lee

I count Soul Calibur as pretty much my favorite fighting game. "Pretty much," because at this point, its hold on that spot comes from sentimentality for the first two entries in the series. Over the third and fourth outing, its grip grew increasingly tenuous. I wasn't alone in that thought. The developers promised a return to what made the original games legendary. In seeking that elusive quality, Soul Calibur V counts nothing as untouchable--neither the character roster nor the game's fighting system systems. Even with the groundwork for a return to form laid by these bold moves, Soul Calibur V's bid to recapture its mystique renders a split-decision.

It took a little getting used to, but the revisions to the core fighting system make amends for the many missteps of the prior two games. I started, as many likely will, with a quick dip into Arcade mode just to see how the game felt. It left me with one overwhelming impression. This game is fast--very fast, and smooth. It took a few rounds to get my mental metronome running at the right tempo to match, but once I did that mesmerizing ballet of armed gymnastics I craved started happening.
Then, the whole thing came to a screeching halt. While it looked like Soul Calibur, things weren't always translating to the screen as I expected. I kept attempting the signature Guard Impact, with its telltale flash of green. But, it's been moved to make room for one of Soul Calibur V's big additions, a new technique named Just Guard.
Just Guard offers a compromise between the significant advantage a successful Guard Impact offers and the vulnerability of a whiff. Executing it "just" as an opponent attacks results in an opening to counterattack, but missing only leaves the defender with their guard down. It almost sounds too good, except that it takes precise timing to get it right. On the other hand, Guard Impact feels like it's back to being a little more lenient.

NOW AVAILABLE AT SKOOBS: FINAL FANTASY XIII-2: NOW AVAILABLE AT SKOOBS

Final Fantasy XIII-2(Final Fantasy XIII-2)

If you enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, read no further. Go out and buy XIII-2 right now. If you need a bit more motivation than that, read on.

13-2 picks up a few years after 13 left off. If you didn't play the first game, there is a pretty comprehensive recap of the events you missed available from the main menu. While this will get you up to speed with the basics of the storyline, you'll be missing out on that special bond with the characters which is one of the many joys of sequels. For this reason, I highly recommend playing 13 first.

On the other hand, 13 may not have appealed to you for a variety of reasons, many of which have been addressed and improved upon for this sequel. The linear storyline, while a necessity in 13, is gone in 13-2. As you start 13-2, you'll immediately learn that something has gone wrong since the end of 13, and that Lightning has gone missing. You, Lightning's younger sister Serah, are the only one who believes she's still out there somewhere. Aided by a mysterious young man called Noel, you embark on a time travelling quest to find your sister and fix whatever went wrong with the timeline. As such, you'll soon be jumping between different times and places, solving puzzles and unravelling the mystery.

As you unlock the various levels and start changing things, you'll be able to embark on missions in the order of your choosing. If you jump into one area that turns out to be too difficult, you can jump to another place in time until your characters are a bit stronger. While this may all seem confusing and overwhelming at first, you'll soon get the hang of jumping through time and sorting out the tangled mess that is spacetime.

Along the way, you'll meet old friends and make new ones, and discover what's been happening since 13 ended. This game even includes some conversation choices, something that's become very popular in Western RPGs, but not so much in JPRGs. And, if that's not enough, you can revisit timelines and try again if you didn't like the outcome. All your meddling can even result in some parallel timelines, which just showcases the myriad effects that your actions can have.
